Do people in the accounting field work a lot of overtime?
Information guru asked:
I just want a rough estimate of how many hours a week I can expect to work in this field. I presently work only about 40 hours a week in sales. I want to move into accounting and go back and get my Masters in Accounting. I know there are seasons, especially during tax season. How many hours during tax season? What about the rest of the year? Is there a lot of stress in this career?

It depends on what fields in the accounting department that you worked in?, which industry?, what’s ur role & responsibility.
In general, ‘processing’ accountant, AP, AR, Asset accountant can work regular 8-5 as long as the workload is ok. Some international companies might expect more, especially at month end when a lot of transactions needs to be recorded.
Analyst, might need to work extra during each month end & quarter end with a bunch of reports & analysis.
Stress is something that you put on yourself, manage your time, know your boss, know your work and you will be ok.

If you want to go into public accounting you should expect to work a lot. I worked about 200 hours of overtime this year and I only took 64 hours of vacation time. That isn’t very much for public accounting from what other people tell me.
I’m an auditor so I’m busy all the time.
